R
esolution is something that virtually
every end user wants more of. Better
quality images make sense, are easy to
understand and easy to justify. However, HD
video has other advantages that add to the
positives it offers.
Higher resolutions equate to better quality
images, an ability to investigate video
without having a detrimental effect on its
content, and the ability to achieve enhanced
performance from analytics solutions and
other processing-based systems.
Because HD is so popular in the consumer
sector, it does increasingly mean that
installers can leverage peripheral cost-
effective devices. For example, displays are
increasingly only available in 16:9 format. Try
costing up a large high quality 4:3 display
and you’ll soon understand!
The final ‘ticked box’ for HD comes from the
fact that is a simpler sell, which is a rare thing
in security. End users are aware that they
want higher quality images, and when
presented with a megapixel option, they do
what most non-technical people have been
programmed to do and ask how many
megapixels? These same users might have 5
megapixel cameras in their phones and 10
megapixel point-and-snap cameras at home.
To them, 1.3 megapixels doesn’t sound too
great. Straightaway the installer or integrator
has to explain the difference between still
images and video.
However, mention HD video, and the end
users understands what they are getting, that
it is of increased quality, and that it carries a
slight price premium. If anything, this point
alone is significant for those seeking to
upgrade surveillance installations.
All cameras in this test deliver HD 720p
performance. The focus of the test was to
assess ease of installation and configuration,
alongside HD performance including image
quality, frame rate and colour accuracy, as
well as suitability of additional features and
functions for security applications.
