O
ne of the greatest myths about CCTV is
that end users are more than happy to
pay for systems which record time-lapsed
video. In the past, the limitations of magnetic
tape forced a situation where multiplexed time-
lapsed video was a necessity. As the
technological barriers have been eroded, so the
expectations of CCTV have been raised. Indeed,
if you ask most end users what they want from
CCTV, it would be high resolution images, in real
time, all of the time! It’s when the cost of that is
realised that compromise starts to creep in.
In recent times, manufacturers have looked
to deliver recording solutions that offer higher
frame rates. With the advance of digital
technology, it becomes increasingly obvious
that real-time is not only desired, but in many
applications it is also demanded, by end users.
To not meet this demand would be to lose out
on vital contracts, and so frame rates have
gradually increased.
Benchmark looked at a variety of DVRs with a
specification that they should offer some level
of higher frame rate. The test has been split
into three parts, because the machines
submitted come in at varying levels of price and
performance. In the first part of the test,
published last issue, we concentrated on
machines aimed at the budget-conscious end
user. The second part of test, published here,
considers machines built for mainstream CCTV
applications, and the final part, published in
the next issue, looks at machines designed for
higher end performance.
The main focus of the test is to consider
whether these machines are capable of
delivering higher levels of performance than
standard DVRs, which are very widely available
in the CCTV sector. If so, does the processing
capability willingly deliver the specified
performance, or do the units creak when put
under pressure?
